Torre
Guaceto is an oasis of wetland and
marine life at the gates of Brindisi,
with 200 hectares of Mediterranean bush
land, high sand dunes and a freshwater
fen, as well as rich sea and land
vegetation. On the coast from Lecce to
San Cataldo and Otranto, there is the
Oasis of Cesine, a natural animal
reserve with a wet area of more than 600
hectares full of Mediterranean plant
life. At the entrance to Otranto, in the
archaeological area of Roca Vecchia,
there are both bronze and iron age
settlements. At Porto Selvaggio there
is an attractive natural park on the
rocks between Porto Cesareo and
Gallipoli with Palaeolithic human and
mammalian remains, such as rhinoceros,
for example. One can find the kingdom of
the thermal waters of Santa Cesarea
Terme. There are also the Romanelli
caves ( Palaeolithic remains and very
beautiful prehistoric cave paintings)
and Zinzulusa with remarkable
stalagmites and stalactites. Finally, in
Salento there are the last remaining
examples of the ancient Vallonea oak, a
species now, unfortunately, in danger of
extinction.
